Communiversity – Purposeful Panic
WE need action…
Stroud Communiversity 2019 brought together community activists and thought-leaders to discuss the pressing issue of moving from Protest to Project.
The brilliant Friday Climate Strike children, Extinction Rebellion, Earth Protectors and others have raised awareness of the perilous state of our planet – the only one we have.
We need now to find ways of harnessing that compelling energy to develop sustainable and realistic initiatives aimed at helping avoid breaching that critical 1.5°. We need action.
As Greta Thunberg put it at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2019,
“I want you to act as if our house is on fire. Because it is!” “We need to panic,” she says.

We need now to find ways of harnessing that compelling energy to develop sustainable and realistic initiatives
Stroud Communiversity 2019 aimed to create ways of panicking in a determined and planned way, by sharing and utilising the experience, skills and wisdom of those already addressing pressing problems in their communities.
The result is this online Dictionary of Community Actions, featuring participants’ and others’ projects, a growing resource that will reassure and inspire those for whom the world is becoming too complicated, too confusing and quite scary, and those too that want to both heal and future-proof their communities.

Along with Frome, Glastonbury and Totnes, Stroud is one of a number of small market towns in the South West known for doing things differently and for pioneering solutions to pressing problems. So, over the weekend of October 18 to 20, Stroud Communiversity 2019 hosted representatives from these four towns in a series of presentations, discussions and visits to cutting-edge projects in Stroud, as a preparation for the Dictionary.
Although Stroud Common Wealth, as the founding group of Stroud Communiversity, is proud of its many achievements, it recognises that now, more than ever, we all need to innovate, to give hope through example and to encourage, guide and nurture the inherent wisdom and ability in all of us. We cannot do this on our own; hence Stroud Communiversity 2019 and the Dictionary of Community Actions. And why we’re inviting others to join, inform and inspire us by contributing their learning to the Dictionary.
